Saru / Spooky Monkey

Producer / DJ - Long Beach, CA.

Born Los Angeles, CA. Steve first tried composing electronic music in 1986 at the tender age of 14, and has been attempting it repeatedly ever since. In 1992, the combination of a burgeoning underground scene and the shrugging off of an industrial disposition spawned an ambient house 12", the 'Heaven on Earth' EP was released under the name Apollo on Silent Records in San Francisco. From 1992-1994, under the same name, Steve hosted the only 3-hour uninterrupted ambient mix radio show in Southern California. This led to his eventual discovery of instrumental hip hop B-sides and the fledgling sound of trip hop. From 1995-1997 Steve explored this genre further as a music director and DJ at a South Carolina radio station, and after a long hiatus from recording re-emerged with the downtempo sounds of Saru. He is currently signed with Bastard Jazz and Shadow Records and records at his home studio in Long Beach, CA, where he lives with his wife Katie. Steve also currently hosts the streaming trip hop/downtempo radio station real:time, and is Resident Downtempo DJ @ RESPECT in Los Angeles.
